How long does SEO take to show results?
Three to six months is the realistic range for meaningful movement, and here is what is actually happening during that time.

The short answer
Meaningful movement typically shows up in three to six months; competitive terms can take longer. Anyone promising results in weeks is either describing paid traffic, not organic, or setting an expectation they cannot actually meet.
Why it takes this long
Search engines have to recrawl your pages, re-evaluate them against competitors, and build enough confidence in the changes before rankings actually move — that process runs on the search engine's schedule, not a contract's.
What happens in the first month
Mostly foundational work — technical fixes, on-page structure, initial content. Rankings rarely move much yet, but this is the stage that determines whether later work has anything solid to build on.
Months two to three
Early signals usually start appearing — small ranking movements, sometimes for lower-competition terms first, as search engines begin re-evaluating the changes made in month one.
Months three to six
This is typically where clearer, more consistent movement shows up, assuming the underlying work was sound and consistent. Competitive terms in crowded markets can reasonably take longer than this.
Beyond six months
For highly competitive terms or newer websites with little existing authority, meaningful rankings can take six months to a year or more. This isn't a sign the work isn't working — it's the reality of competing against established sites that have been earning trust signals for years.
How website age and existing authority change the timeline
A newer site with no existing backlink profile or search history generally takes longer to see results than an established site with years of accumulated trust, even with identical optimization work. This is one of the most common reasons two businesses doing "the same SEO work" see different timelines.
What speeds it up, and what doesn't
A technically clean starting point, consistent work rather than a one-off burst, and realistic target keywords all help. More content published faster does not reliably speed things up if it is not addressing a real gap or search intent.
How to tell if SEO is "working" before rankings fully show it
Leading indicators worth watching before rankings themselves move significantly: whether pages are being indexed and crawled more frequently, whether impressions in Google Search Console are trending up even if click-through hasn't caught up yet, and whether technical issues identified in an audit are actually getting fixed on schedule.
Why "no timeline" answers are actually more honest
Search algorithms and competitor behavior are outside any agency's control. A specific week-by-week promise is closer to a guess dressed up as a plan than a genuine forecast.
